Mango Languages Mango is an online language learning system that teaches real conversation skills for practical communication. Through fun and engaging interactive lessons, Mango makes learning a new language fast, easy and incredibly effective. The system is completely web-based and remotely accessible, so you can learn anywhere you have an internet connection. As you listen to and repeat after native speakers, you'll learn more than just words and phrases. You’ll learn how those pieces can be rearranged and combined to make new thoughts, new conversations, and even more practical communication! In no time at all, you'll be able to navigate all sorts of everyday situations — get directions, order a meal, make new friends — the possibilities are endless! Ancestry Anyone doing research into their ancestors knows that ancestry.com is far and away the best website for tracking down all the details about one’s relatives. Ancestry’s extensive databases include census records; immigration and emigration records; newspapers and periodicals; court, land, wills and financial records; directories and member lists; military records; birth, marriage and death records; and more. The library edition of Ancestry provides access to patrons on site at the library but does not permit access from home. Patrons who bring their own laptops to the library and access the internet through our wireless capability will be able to access Ancestry. Ancestry is provided to Canton Public Library patrons through the generosity of the Friends of the Canton Public Library. Historical Hartford Courant Search for historical information in the oldest newspaper in continuous publication in the United States. This database includes most articles that appeared in the Hartford Courant from 1764 to 1985. You can pring the articles or email them to yourself. To access Hartford Courant articles from 1993 to the present, use the iCONN link below. Please note that, at this time, we do not have access to Hartford Courant articles from 1986 to 1992. If you need articles from this period, we will try to obtain them for you through interlibrary loan.
iCONN is Connecticut's reSearch Engine. iCONN gives you access to the statewide library catalog, full-text magazine and newspaper articles, health and science information, Connecticut history resources, and so much more. You will need your library card number to sign in from home. iCONN is a service of the Connecticut State Library.
JobNow! is an online chat resource that helps people to review their resumes and cover letters and practice interviewing online. The live, interactive online help is available from 3 PM to 11 PM seven days a week. In addition, a variety of other online resources guides patrons through the necessary tasks to get a job. JobNow! is available for inhouse use at the library and can be accessed at home with a patron’s bar code and PIN. On the home page for JobNow!, patrons will have three services from which to choose. “Find a Job” offers informative, easy-to-use, and free Internet resources for job seekers, including personality and career assessments. “Write a Resume” includes resume templates for four of the most common resume types; a lab through which patrons can send their resumes to a JobNow expert for analysis within 24 hours; and links to Internet sites for more information on resume writing. Finally, “Ace the Interview” supplies live interview coaching to help job-seekers brush up on interview skills; tips and common interview questions; and links to Internet sites for additional help in preparing for an interview.
Overdrive Downloadable Media offers you the opportunity to browse audiobook selections from your home, download them to your computer, and transfer them to your portable digital music player. Downloadable eBooks are also available; they are compatible with the Sony Reader, the Barnes & Noble Nook, and most computer systems. Click on the image above to begin.
LearningExpressLibrary features more than 300 online practice tests and courses for students of all ages, including such official exams as ACT, SAT, GED, ASVAB, firefighter, police officer, paramedic, EMT Basic, U.S. citizenship, postal worker, cosmetology, real estate agent and broker. In addition, there are practice tests for those who simply want to improve their reading, writing, math, or grammar skills. All LearningExpress tests and courses offer test takers immediate scoring and detailed explanations of answers to all questions. Test results also indicate areas in which additional practice might improve scores and include recommendations for free online tutorial courses. This resource is available both in the library and at home to Canton patrons. Within the library, Canton patrons will be able to access the LearningExpress Library on the library's computers or on their own laptops using the library's wireless access to the Internet. Either in the library or at home, patrons will need to enter their Canton Public Library card number. LearningExpress Library is provided thanks to a generous gift from the Friends of the Canton Public Library.
