The Friends of the Canton Public Library
The Friends of the Canton Public Library is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1964 and incorporated in 1979. The goals of the Friends are:
- To build a membership of citizens who support the library
- To encourage the use of library services
- To spotlight the value of the library in the life of our community
- To expand the resources of the library through fundraising
As a result of Friends’ fundraising and volunteer efforts in the past, the library has been able to purchase collection items, programs, equipment, and services not provided through its operating budget. Some recent examples:
- Books, audiobooks, DVDs, compact discs, computer software, Wii games, and puppets
- Admission passes to over 20 Connecticut and Massachusetts museums and cultural sites
- Information databases, such as Ancestry.com, Learning Express Library, and the Historical Hartford Courant
- Children’s programs (storytellers, magic shows, science demonstrations, singers, craft workshops, etc.)
- Adult programs (author visits; winter music concerts; programs on food, gardening, and personal organization; the annual crossword puzzle tournament; etc.)
- Public performance copyright license to show movies
- Equipment (a compact disc/DVD buffer, printers, a fax machine, etc.)
- Library information brochure for patrons
- New library cards (including a key ring card option)
