For its May selection, Thursday Book Conversations at Canton Public Library has chosen Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The discussion will be held on Thursday, May 29 at 1:00 PM.
Set in a South American country as the nineteenth century turns into the twentieth, Florentino Ariza becomes enamoured with the adolescent Fermina Daza. Fermina, however, does not return his love and instead marries the wealthy and well-born Dr. Juvenal Urbino. For fifty years, Florentino pines for his lost love. He carries on a series of affairs, 622 to be exact and mostly with widows. He composes love poems for other men to send to their beloved. And then, 50 years later, at the funeral of Fermina's husband, Florentino reiterates his love for her.
Garcia Marquez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982, is known for his masterful storytelling and touching narrative. Love in the Time of Cholera presents love in its many forms, from pubescent love to married love to love in old age-love as a force in the world.
